Understanding Drone Detection Systems with Remote ID Integration

Successful Drone detection systems are engineered to identify, track, and manage unauthorized drone threats activity within controlled airspace. The advent of Remote ID—a system that broadcasts a drone’s identity, location, and pilot information in real time—has revolutionized drone defense by providing actionable intelligence that goes beyond mere detection.

At Covered 6, we emphasize that a successful drone detection solution must integrate Remote ID signals alongside traditional detection technologies such as radar, radio frequency (RF) detection, and other methods like radar paired with high resolution visual PTZ cameras like the ones we mount to our Covered 6 mobile technology platforms. This multi-sensor fusion ensures comprehensive coverage, including the ability to detect custom drones that may not broadcast Remote ID signals.

How Remote ID Enhances Drone Detection

Remote ID systems broadcast essential data about drones and their operators, including pilot location, flight path, and unique drone identifiers. This transparency enables security teams to quickly distinguish between authorized and unauthorized drones, drastically improving situational awareness.

When combined with radar, RF detection, and Hig Resolution PTZ cameras, Remote ID allows for precise tracking of drones in real time, even in complex environments like airports or correctional facilities. For example, AeroDefense’s Air Warden platform integrates Remote ID data with other sensor inputs, providing security teams with a unified interface to monitor drone activity and respond proactively.

Components of a Modern Drone Detection Solution

A modern, effective drone detection system incorporates:

Remote ID signal receivers to capture drone broadcast data

Radar to detect all flying objects, including non-transmitting or ‘dark’ drones

RF and acoustic sensors to identify drone control signals and unique acoustic signatures. This option is typically the least accurate in our experience.

Visual tracking with cameras to confirm drone identity and behavior

This multi-layered approach allows for high accuracy in detecting unauthorized drones, reducing false alarms, and enabling rapid response.

Environmental factors influence the effectiveness of RF, radar, and optical detection methods. Remote ID is not affected by weather.

Protecting Critical Infrastructure with Remote ID-Enabled Detection

Critical infrastructure such as power plants, water treatment facilities, and gas pipelines are increasingly targeted by drones for surveillance or malicious acts. Integrating Remote ID detection provides security teams with real-time access to drone and pilot data, facilitating swift threat assessment and mitigation.

The following is a message from a former Covered 6 Security Academy Graduate detailing a situation where he applied his Covered 6 training to a gunshot victim.

Early this morning around 12:23am I was sitting up watching a show on Netflix before I went to bed when I was suddenly interrupted by two gunshots that rattled my windows from outside. I immediately hopped up, opened the back door and stood outside to see what was going on when I began to hear cries for help. Without hesitation I grabbed my IFAK out of my bag (the one I bought at the Covered 6 facility), threw my sneakers on and ran to the direction of the cries for help. While running I can only explain what was hyper focus. All the medical training for gunshot wounds that i learned while going through the PSS course began to play in my mind like a movie. Chest seals, tourniquets, direct pressure, splints for broken bones. It was all cycling through my mind in preparation for what I might be running into. When I found the guy that had been shot, he was sitting in a doorway hiding from the shooter but screaming for help. After a quick assessment and a few questions I found that he had only been hit with one of the two shots and that the bullet that had hit him had went in, broke his right wrist and was lodged in there and was poking out of the exit wound. I immediately applied my tourniquet, due to blood pouring from his wrist and not knowing if it had severed the vein and dressed the wound with gauze. I tried my best to stabilize it with what I had, while not having splint, and without causing further injury. After triage, I got him up, moved him to a safer location and took care of him until police and paramedics arrived on scene. Everything happened so fast and the rush of adrenaline had me up for about 3 more hours after that.

Basically, if it wasn’t for my training at Covered 6 I wouldn’t have been able to help him the way I was able to.

If we hadn’t gone through those scenarios, I might not have been as calm as I was in the moment. It’s moments like these that truly define us and show us not only our capabilities but who we are. Covered 6 helped me to learn that my purpose in this lifetime is to help humanity. To be a protector. In that moment I was completely unfazed by the blood and the wound. My own safety was the least of my concerns and my sole focus was making sure that man was treated properly, safe and that he knew that someone was there with him to make sure he’d be ok. I can’t thank Kirk and Melissa enough for their extensive and thorough medical training. The intense scenarios they put us through to ensure proficiency prepared me more for this moment than I ever realized while going through it. My respect for them has exponentially sky rocketed and I can’t even begin to thank them enough for their expertise and just overall love for not only putting these medical practices into play but teaching others as well.

Also, His wound was non life threatening and he’ll be fine. The police and paramedics were highly impressed on my control of the situation and all the credit goes to the training at Covered 6! Thanks family!

I’d also like to give a lot of credit to my favorite instructor Curt Smith. He’s become a great mentor and friend and while going through the course helped me to realize the pride and passion in the protector role that covered 6 engraves into all the students that go through the course on a deep level. That dude is awesome beyond belief! —

V/R,

The private security industry is evolving more rapidly than ever before as it faces the country’s challenges in securing both public and private interests. Because the mission of security now may involve much greater personal interaction with its clients and the people they serve, security officers should possess high emotional intelligence, patience, and empathy. The most effective and valued officers will understand that a concierge approach to their interactions will have far reaching positive effects.

Not only reacting to a client’s needs but anticipating what those needs might be will set a security company apart from all others. An example of this anticipatory behavior was exemplified recently by Covered Six Security Manager Guy Hartson who personally telephoned a resident in his area to advise them of a neighbors planned party that may affect their quality of life. Guy told me, “I feel that information sharing is a huge component of an effective, efficient workplace. The information sharing has to start at the bottom and go all the way to the top.” I received feedback from the resident who stated that she felt “special because the officer took the time to think of me and how the loud party might affect me, I really appreciated that”. I call this type of positive interaction a “micro experience” which is a short time duration experience that leaves a person with an immediate impression that they can have confidence in someone’s abilities and leaves them feeling really good.

Give enough of these micro experiences to your clients and eventually you have a lasting positive impression and confidence in your security company and your brand. It’s not always about catching a criminal or stopping criminal activity, sometimes the small things make the biggest difference. Just remember, it takes genuine empathy to make the micro experience real. <>

Both officers’ eyes carefully scan the debris-strewn alleyway as the partners cautiously move forward together. They received a radio call of shots fired and somebody screaming but nothing further. Working as a team, they continue, vigilantly searching, ignoring the beads of sweat rolling down their backs and the flies buzzing annoyingly around their heads. Suddenly, from behind a wrecked car, a man stands up, holding what appears to be a gun down by his side. Simultaneously, both officers feel adrenaline dumping into their bodies as one begins issuing commands to the suspect while the other provides cover. The man ignores them, smiles, and begins raising the gun in their direction.

What separates a real-life and death incident from a training scenario? Lack of fear and the physiological changes that take place in the human body come to mind. Unless officers train under these conditions, the correct responses displayed during training may not be reproduced in the real world. So the challenge is to reproduce a more realistic scenario that officers can negotiate and interact with in training, but most importantly, “lose themselves in” so that whatever they experience becomes “real,” producing some fear and physiological changes.

Great strides have been made to create reality-based training (RBT), including virtual reality (VR), which unfortunately offers very little true sensory feedback or proprioceptor orientation. Many officers complain about experiencing vertigo, disorientation, and eye strain. Some departments have nicknamed their VR systems the “Barforama.” These unintended byproducts take the officer out of the immersion and cause unrealistic distractions. These systems are cumbersome as the officer is tethered to equipment, making movement difficult. VR training is usually confined to a closed space training room which further separates the officer from the reality of the streets.

With the need for officers to train in a “real world” environment, in steps Covered 6’s “mixed reality” technology (MXR). Blending real and virtual worlds, Covered 6’s mixed reality MXR technology produces an intensive new environment where virtual objects exist and interact in a real-time reality. High-tech reality-based advancements result from extensive progress in processing power, display technology, and graphical input systems.

MXR interweaves real and virtual worlds, giving users an accurate 3D account of virtual and real objects around them. It continually transforms the user’s perception of the real-world scenario as they travel through an actual space, untethered to any cumbersome equipment. An MXR system can be used anywhere, at any time, allowing the officer to escape the confines of a training room and move around naturally. This technology does not require a fixed space for a simulator or its training environments, making MXR training a highly cost effective solution. In addition, MXR can involve a partner or team interaction training simultaneously. Training with real partners, not avatars, adds another level of realism not achieved with VR.

Using this technology, MXR at Covered 6 eclipses traditional simulated tactical training. Instead, its immersive applications give users the complete experiential training that emulates reality, including situational awareness, stress inoculation, and other stimulation to test decision-making skills and reaction time. “We are pioneering the next evolution of virtual reality training with MXR,” explained Chris Dunn, CEO and Founder of Covered 6, “MXR will radically increase portability, training versatility, and performance and programming for law enforcement, the military, and other agencies.”

Covered 6’s MXR platform rivals that of leading technology suppliers in this vertical, one of which is a branch of the U.S. military recently awarded a contract to customize its augmented reality product for their training. The contract is worth billions over a decade. Covered 6 holds multiple patents for innovative MXR applications in the cyber and drone industries and various public safety industries, including law enforcement and fire.

The power of training with MXR is evident; the future of MXR is imminent: “My vision for The C6 MXR program is to bring the latest tech advantages to the first responder industry,” said Mr. Dunn. <>

Covered 6 Team:

The COVID-19 epidemic that has spread across the globe has created unprecedented challenges that we are facing together, as a community and as a company.

Thank you for your continued professionalism and leadership in the face of this historic crisis. We appreciate your dedication and perseverance during this period of uncertainty. As we work through these difficult times, we want you to know that we care about you and share your concerns about the potential impact this crisis may bring to Covered 6.

Please understand that we are taking proactive measures to strategically plan for the ever-changing scenarios presented by this virus. We are doing this by engaging in dialogue with industry partners and collaborating closely with our clients. Unfortunately, short and long term effects on Covered 6 operations, resulting from government mandates, are likely. Keeping that in mind, we want to communicate directly with you, to demonstrate respect and the utmost transparency in this process.

Should reductions become necessary, we will do our best to relocate staff to other assignments within Covered 6. We recognize that this may not be possible in all cases, and as a result, want to share some important information with you. Knowledge is power. Please take the time now to visit the Employment Development Department website. Information regarding benefits available to employees impacted through quarantine, caregiving, and reduction of hours, as a result of COVID19 may be found on this website. This site also provides a link to the Governor’s Executive Order waiving the one-week unpaid waiting period for benefit payments. Below is a summary of the information and links available through EDD:

Sick or Quarantined

If you’re unable to work due to having or being exposed to COVID-19 (certified by a medical professional), you can file a Disability Insurance (DI) claim. DI provides short-term benefit payments to eligible workers who have a full or partial loss of wages due to a non-work-related illness, injury, or pregnancy. Benefit amounts are approximately 60-70 percent of wages (depending on income) and range from $50-$1,300 a week.

If you’re unable to work because you are caring for an ill or quarantined family member with COVID-19 (certified by a medical professional), you can file a Paid Family Leave (PFL) claim.
School Closures

If your child’s school is closed, and you have to miss work to be there for them, you may be eligible for Unemployment Insurance benefits. However, they must remain able and available and ready to work during their unemployment for each week of benefits claimed and meet all other eligibility criteria.
With tragic active shooting incidents occurring on local and national levels — including the shooting at Saugus High School in November that left two students dead — the need to protect ourselves and have the ability to help the injured is greater than ever before.

“The world has changed — it’s volatile, it’s uncertain, it’s complex. And the threats have changed, so everyone’s involved. Everyone is a first responder, and everyone can train,” said Chris Dunn, CEO of Covered 6 in Moorpark, which provides courses in first-responder techniques.

In the event of an active shooter, “who’s going to be there when the injured are left? Civilians,” said Omar Herrera, Covered 6 chief operating officer. “People are left injured and somebody wants to do something but they don’t know how. Our courses teach them.”

Hundreds of people are taking or have completed courses at Covered 6, including a tactical medicine course called Tactical Emergency Casualty Care, in which they learn life-saving techniques and strategies for providing the best trauma care. This class is geared towards military personnel, but civilians learn the same life-saving principles (geared towards the private EMS responder).

Covered 6 also offers all levels of “awareness” training through A.D.A.P.T. — Awareness and Defense Against Physical Threats — which trains teachers and school administrators for crisis response and de-escalation when confronted with emergency scenarios. This program, which focuses on an alternative response to “personal threat” emergencies, provides students and staff with options to avoid potentially threatening situations and increase their chance of survival.

AWARENESS TOWARD SELF-RELIANCE

“We’re at the highest point we’ve ever been in awareness toward self-reliance for public safety, which includes civilians,” Dunn said. “Everyone’s a citizen, everyone’s affected by the things that are happening — the volatility, the uncertainty. Our programs are important because civilians are part of the effort to be a first responder.”

Covered 6 is military vernacular that essentially means, “your back is covered,” said Dunn. The company is made up of a group of highly trained professionals with backgrounds in law enforcement, military and corporate security who have gained experience in austere environments, real-life combat scenarios and major crisis management, both stateside and abroad.

Through what Dunn calls a “holistic approach,” Covered 6 “balances courtesy and compliance” with specialists that provide a sophisticated, innovative and collaborative solution for clients seeking protection across the board. These solutions are provided through physical and cyber security, protecting communities and providing executive protection for high-net-worth individuals, including those who are targets of sophisticated attacks.

Courses at Covered 6 that are open to the public include Tactical Emergency Casualty Care, in which lessons learned from military personnel are applied to the civilian world of tactical medicine. Skills taught in this class include hemorrhage control, care for pediatric patients, and techniques for dragging and carrying victims to safety.

Janice Parvin, the mayor of Moorpark, said “it’s good to have this type of training available, especially during the times we’re living in.”

DEFEND, GUARD, PROTECT

Aug. 24 was officially designated as Covered 6 Day in Moorpark by Parvin during the grand opening of the Covered 6 Patriot Center, a 20,000-square-foot state-of-the-art training facility located on Patriot Drive. More than 500 people, including veterans and their families, attended the open house, where the Moorpark Mayor praised Covered 6 for specializing in security training, cyber training and executive protection. These and other skills are taught through Academy Courses at Covered 6.

During the open house, Mayor Parvin gave special recognition to Dunn “for finding jobs for our veterans.”

“Chris is an Army veteran and former police detective in Los Angeles,” she said. “He employs veterans and has helped other companies hire veterans — about 700 so far.”

Defend, guard, protect is the motto of Covered 6, Dunn said during the open house.

“The philanthropic vision of what we do with veterans has now become one of our primary missions,” Dunn noted. “We’ve been engaged in the longest war in U.S. history; we have people that have come out . . . and trying to get a job is extremely difficult because those skills don’t necessarily apply. Veterans are one of our single greatest resources we have.”

To that end, the C6 Foundation, a nonprofit organization, gives veterans “compacted support” by providing vocational certifications and, ultimately, job placements.

“The C6 Foundation directly supports the veterans and their families who have run out of benefits, fall on hard times or need assistance to get back on track — while maintaining their dignity,” said Dan Arnold, president of the C6 Foundation.

Many military veterans face challenges when they transition back to civilian life, he noted. Some who go to college obtain a general degree and debt. Others don’t know how to apply their skills from the military.

CIVILIANS IN A THREAT-SCAPE WORLD

As a civilian living in a threat-scape world, Julie Bellinder has “chosen to be a survivor at all cost.”

In 2010, she was a victim of domestic violence, in which “the verbal and physical abuse occurred several times and yet I felt somehow I deserved it,” recalled Bellinder, 41, of Ventura.

“I lived in fear for years after the ordeal . . . constantly looking over my shoulder, becoming a prisoner in my own home,” she said. “My self-esteem and confidence to face the world and unknowns was lost. When someone labels you as a victim, it makes you feel weak and defenseless.”

She had a paradigm shift when she enrolled in the Physical Security Specialist Program though Covered 6 last year, with the intent of pursuing a career within the private sector as well as surveillance. The modules covered during this five-week academy included arresting techniques, surveillance, active shooter situations, tactical emergency casualty care, de-escalation techniques, situational awareness and firearms training.

“I remember the first day . . . all of the students sitting in a classroom, complete strangers. I was nervous and excited all at once, not knowing what to expect,” Bellinder remembered. Over the course of five weeks, “we trained hard together, learned a lot of important information pertaining to the private security sector, and forged friendships along the way. There was a sense of camaraderie between all of us.”

Bellinder also took the Carrying Concealed Weapon training course. “The instructors spent a fair amount of time in a classroom setting reviewing gun laws and firearm safety. After the class room instruction, we went up to the range to qualify,” she said. “The instructors that teach the course are extremely knowledgeable and spend time with the students ensuring that everyone understands the fundamentals of operating a firearm in a safe and effective manner.”

SKILL SETS FOR LIFE

Looking back, Bellinger believes she is not the same woman she was before she trained at Covered 6.

“I had gained more than just knowledge. I had changed. No longer did I look over my shoulder; no longer did I feel weak or defenseless. I walked with purpose and had a confidence about me that no one person will ever take away.”

Today, “I can go out into the world with eyes wide open, being situationally aware of my surroundings and having the knowledge on how to defend myself, guard against threats and protect my family and friends.”

As a civilian, “the training I learned through Covered 6 are skill sets I implement into my life on a daily basis, not only on a professional level, but on a personal one as well. I encourage everyone to seek out formal training of this caliber and learn how to protect yourself and loved ones living in today’s society.”

By Alicia Doyle

An Army Reservist for 14 years, Margurie Evans discovered Covered 6 while working at the post office and looking to utilize her specialized skill set she learned in the military.

“A lot of veterans come out of the service with no idea of what they’re going to do,” says Evans, 34, who found Covered 6 in Moorpark while doing an online search.

“It felt like the right move,” says Evans, who took physical security and executive protection courses at Covered 6, which provides vocational certifications—and ultimately, job placement.

“Jumping into the security field is… easier than anything else that is offered, because most of the jobs that are offered to veterans coming out of service are usually law enforcement-oriented,” she says. “This gives those veterans the ability to not have to jump into a job that’s chosen for them, but a job that they can choose.”

Many veterans have difficulties transitioning back to civilian life—some attend college, obtain a general degree and acquire debt, while others don’t know how to apply their military skills.

Covered 6 is military vernacular derived from service members telling each other that they are safe—in other words, “your back is covered,” explains Chris Dunn, CEO and founder of Covered 6.

With active shootings and domestic terror attacks in today’s times, the need for a national private security standard is greater than ever before, says Dunn. Covered 6 meets this need through protective services across the globe, tactical and vocational training programs, and patented product innovations for first responders.

When incidents occur, “those of us who are trained already are usually the first ones to step up and take action and help,” Evans says.

“You hear about a veteran helping a person during a mass conflict, or a person when there is a random shooter—usually it’s a veteran that’s the first one to step up,” Evans emphasizes. “With the specialized training that Covered 6 offers, it only makes us more prepared for those who are looking to have protection for themselves and their neighbors.”

Some veterans fall on hard times because their benefits run out and they find themselves disillusioned and homeless, says Dan Arnold, president of the C6 Foundation, a nonprofit involved with Covered 6.

The C6 Foundation directly supports veterans and their families who have run out of benefits, fall on hard times or need assistance to get back on track—while maintaining their dignity, says Arnold, noting that the foundation helps provide essentials like housing, meals, clothing and tuition support.

Those eligible to receive help include any first responder or veteran, as well as civilians who demonstrate a desire to make their lives better through defending, guarding and protecting others. “Many describe this desire as a calling or a way of life,” Arnold says.

“We are dedicated to helping in these ways because we feel this is the most effective way to get someone back in the right mindset for success,” Arnold says, adding that Ronald Reagan said it best: “If you want to cure PTSD, give a veteran a job.”

“Employment sourcing is an essential part of the program,” says Arnold, noting that 85% of recipients are placed after attending the programs. “Things like self-respect, service, passion and dignity cannot be restored by temporary gratification and handouts. People need a sense of purpose to do what they are drawn to—which is protect and serve.”

Moorpark City Mayor Janice Parvin officially designated August 24 as Covered 6 Day during the grand opening of the Covered 6 Patriot Center, a 20,000-square-foot state-of-the-art training facility.

More than 500 people attended the event, where Mayor Parvin praised Covered 6, giving special recognition to Dunn “for finding jobs for our veterans.”

“Chris is an Army veteran and former police detective in Los Angeles,” Mayor Parvin said during the event. “He employs veterans and has helped other companies hire veterans—about 700 so far. Chris is an innovator, from his training programs to his tactical products. He has chosen the right town, Moorpark, on the right street, Patriot Drive, to grow his business.”

Javarre Glanton, a Marine for eight years, was working in the security industry and looking for a job online when he discovered Covered 6.

“I looked into it, and I thought, this sounds exactly like something I should do,” says Glanton, 31, who enrolled in courses.

“In the military, we’ve already acquired the skill set for security, so we’re a perfect fit,” Glanton adds. “I recommend this to any military vet who’s going into security or who’s already in security. There’s a lot to take away from these courses.”

Covered 6 also provides camaraderie for veterans.

“Everyone in our class is a military vet, so it was like coming back home,” Glanton says. “Instantly, everyone is a friend. It’s like coming to a family reunion, meeting family you didn’t know you had.”

Keith Martin, a 31-year-old veteran who served in the Army for 14 years, says he enjoys taking security courses at Covered 6 with “people that think along the same lines as you do and from the same background. It gives you more of a sense of stability, because you’ve all been deployed or in the same situations, so you can understand each other and speak the same language.”

Nicholas Larkins, a student at Covered 6 who served in the Marines from 2010 to 2014, notes “everyone that works here is a veteran. When you’re taught by veterans who have been in deployments, everyone comes here with the same training and knowledge, and you leave with so much more.”

Larkins thanks Dunn in particular for changing his life since he left the Marines.

“He made me feel like I was powerful again and respected,” Larkins emphasizes. “I hadn’t felt any respect or honor coming from anybody since I got out. Chris Dunn has given me everything—I can stand tall now.”
